A mother nuzzles her young pup (less than 2-3 days old). Pups are born with their eyes open, but uncoordinated and weak. They spend most of their first 4-5 days nursing, sleeping, or resting by their mother's side.

During the CA sea lion pupping season, as many as 40,000 pinnipeds can be found at Point Bennett alone. The Channel Islands National Park hold the largest breeding ground for California sea lions in the world.
